A vacation is a break from our work lives, a chance to escape the 9 to 5 and see something different, to experience a new culture, to sit by the beach, to go on an adventure. The exact definition of vacation means to leave something once previously occupied for a period of time. A vacation from work is a powerful thing. However, a vacation from work is not a vacation from every part of our life. Many of us are strict with our gym and diet routines and when we take a vacation from work we also take a vacation from these routines too. If you are burned out from the gym or have been dieting to an excessive level, then a break makes a lot of sense. However, if you are just giving in to the temptation to be lazy or are unable to stick to your routine in your strange vacation location, then read on. We have some tips to stay fit and healthy while on holiday.
Water
The most important tip I can recommend to anyone going on holiday is to drink lots of water. If you are in a hot or cold climate, drinking water is incredibly important. You will be operating outside your usual routine so you may forget to drink your usual 3 liters a day and this can have a greater impact on you than you realize. The strange foods you try to eat will be harder to digest, your energy levels will fall and you will likely become dehydrated without even realizing. Keep your water intake high to make every other aspect of the holiday, easy.
Sleep
One other thing that takes a huge hit during a vacation is sleep. Whether you are on a holiday with the guys and are out every night or on a vacation with your mum and waking up for 5 am hikes. There can be a tendency to sleep less to try and do more. Excitement often plays a factor too. At home, you may be in bed by nine but that is impossible while on holiday. It is important to try and get at least seven hours of sleep every night, especially when on holiday. This will ensure that when you come back you are not just getting over missing your waking routine but your sleeping one too. Try and keep whatever you can consistent.
Walk
One thing you will have plenty of options to do on holiday is walk. Take that opportunity. While there will always be a tuk-tuk at the bottom of the hill offering you an easy lift, or an elevator to a viewpoint. Try and take the active approach on your vacation. Walk where you want to go, and always take the stairs.
Consistent calories
On holiday there is a tendency to eat a lot. It makes sense as there are some delicious foods that you just don’t have the opportunity to eat at home. However, try not to overdo your calorie intake. Your body is used to the set number of calories you usually eat so try not to stray too far outside that.
Exercise in the mornings
One of the best tips, in order to stay active on holidays, is to exercise in the morning. Even if you are someone who prefers to exercise at night usually, you will find you have less energy after having an action-packed day. Get your exercise down early and then you can let the day go wherever it likes. Running in the morning is a great and safe way to explore a new city or location and if you are really stuck there are many workouts that you can do in your room as well.
